Gonzalez & Recchia Power Rutgers-Newark Past Drew, 8-5

NEWARK, NJ | A late rally by the Scarlet Raiders baseball program helped Rutgers-Newark take down Drew University, 8-5. The win boosted the Scarlet Raiders to 17-5 while Drew fell to 11-13.

Paul Recchia finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs while Robert Gonzalez and Eric Recchia each went 2-for-3 with three and one RBI, respectively. Michael Scaglione got the start on the bump and tossed seven innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs, however, it was Vince Taylor (5-1) who picked up the win.

After both teams went scoreless in the opening inning, Drew plated a pair in the top of the second before doing the same in the following inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Scarlet Raiders slowly chipped away at the lead scoring a run in each of the next three innings. Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly in the 3rd and was followed by an Eric Recchia RBI single down the left field line. Matthew Rypkema joined in and grounded out to 2nd but Gonzalez sprinted home to cut their deficit down to one.

In the bottom of the 7th, it was once again Gonzalez leading the way as he singled through the left side to plate Michael Weinbel who reached earlier via a single up the middle. With bases loaded, Dominic Goodenough balked to bring home the tying run for the Scarlet Raiders. Drew tied it up in the top of the 8th with a run, but Rutgers-Newark used hits by Gonzalez and Recchia to plate three runs before Taylor shut down the Rangers in the top of the 9th.
