Softball Unable To Cage Profs in NJAC Doubleheader

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball team dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader this afternoon to #15 Rowan University, 7-1, 9-0. The pair of losses drop the Scarlet Raiders to 7-13, 1-5 while Rowan improved to 23-3, 6-0.

Game 1: #15 Rowan 7, Rutgers-Newark 1

Madison Umlauf (3-7) pitched a complete game and allowed 11 hits with five earned runs. Alex Di Martino, Keelin O'Brien and Gabriela Forese each tallied a hit in the loss.

Rowan burst the game open in the first inning, plating five runs on six hits. The Scarlet Raiders found their way on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd after Di Martino hit a two-out triple to left center. Di Martino wouldn't be stranded long as O'Brien found a gap in left field for an RBI single to cut the lead down to 5-1.

Rylee Lutz, however, would shut down the Scarlet Raiders after that, holding them without a hit for a remainder of the game. The Profs added a run in the 6th and 7th inning to close out the game on 11 hits.

Game 2: #15 Rowan 9, Rutgers-Newark 0

The Scarlet Raiders were held to one hit in the second game which was tallied by Forese. Madison DiGiorgio (4-6) hurled 4.1 innings and allowed four earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.

Rutgers-Newark held Rowan scoreless for the opening pair of innings before the bats got going in the top of the 3rd. The Profs tallied four runs in the 4th and five more in the top of the 5th to end the game with a mercy rule.
