Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Raiders WBB Falls to Rutgers-Camden

NEWARK, NJ - It was definitely a game that lived up to the hype, as the Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team tipped off game one of the doubleheader tonight against Rutgers-Camden. The Raptors were able to top the Raiders, 78-73 at The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Camden (4-2) jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 6:49 showing on the clock in the first quarter, forcing the Raiders to take a timeout.

It was like Rutgers-Camden couldn't miss a shot as it ran up and down the floor, and Rutgers-Newark couldn't get a shot to fall no matter how hard they tried.

It was a gritty ball game from the jump, leading to a 19-6 advantage for the visitors.

The Raiders battled back in the second quarter going on an 8-0 scoring run. Rutgers-Newark's offensive pressure forced the Raptors to call a few timeouts to regroup themselves. Feeling the Raiders on their heels the Raptors were able to take a two point lead into intermission at 33–31.

Although riddled by 21 turnovers in the first half the Raiders were still able to score 20 points in the paint and get a bench production of 13 points in order to stay in the game.

Coming out of the break, Arlenny Medina hit a quick jumper to get the offense going. Quanajah Felder gave the Raiders their first lead of the game at 35-33 with 8:59 left in the third quarter.

With the Raiders continuing to claw their way back, Medina hit a floating jumper with under seven minutes remaining in the game to give the Raiders just their second lead of the game at 58–57.

The Raptors tied it at the free throw line before a Felder fast break bucket made it 60-58 in favor of the home team.

Neither team was willing to give up. The Raiders powered through and recorded back-to-back buckets to take a 67-63 lead with two minutes to go. The Raptors responded with a three-pointer seconds after.

A steal and a fast break layup resulted in the lead going back and forth between the teams. As minutes became seconds, it was a battle of ball control.

The Raptors made a steal and called for a timeout with 59.1 seconds on the clock as Rutgers-Newark clung to a one-point lead.

Rutgers-Camden hit a three-pointer followed by points at the free throw line. The Raptors added seven points at the charity stripe in the final minute of play. Rutgers-Newark missed too many opportunities in the paint and couldn't complete the comeback over their Rutgers' rivals.

The loss snapped a three-game win streak by the Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark (3-4) was led by Tracey Ilderis who recorded a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead Rutgers-Newark. Medina tallied 17 points, six steals, and six rebounds. Felder added 15 points on 58.3 percent shooting.

Na'Caia Jackson led the Raptors with 22 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Courtney Edmundo added 19 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double.
