Women’s Hoops Drops 53-40 Decision to NJCU

NEWARK, NJ - It was a doubleheader kind of night at The Golden Dome in Brick City. The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team took on New Jersey City University, where they fell 53-40 to the visiting Gothic Knights.

NJCU (3-3) applied the pressure in the first quarter taking a 13-7 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.

The Gothic Knights took a 26-15 lead at intermission after being able to capitalize on nine points from their bench and eight points off of fast breaks. Kendra Rigo was leading the charge for NJCU with eight points and four rebounds after 20 minutes of play. Rutgers-Newark had five players score with half of their points coming inside the paint.

The third quarter saw Rutgers-Newark fight back, pushing the ball up and down the court and making their hands just as quick as their feet. The Raiders worked the ball on the inside and trimmed the lead to 38-27, down by 11 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

With five minutes and 52 seconds remaining in the game, NJCU called a timeout with a 43-31 lead over Rutgers-Newark. Time was running out for the Raiders to complete a comeback as they struggled to keep the Gothic Knights from second chance points. NJCU kept the Raiders at bay to defeat Rutgers-Newark by 13 points.

Rigo led NJCU in scoring, despite fouling out with five minutes remaining in the game. She recorded 13 points and grabbed seven boards. Destiny Battle added 11 points, five rebounds, and four steals for the visitors.

Rutgers-Newark (3-5) was led in scoring by Sanaa Brodie. The guard had 10 points, the only Raider to finish in double digits in scoring, as she shot 44.4 percent from the floor. She also tallied five steals and six rebounds.

The Raiders return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Montclair State. The game is set for a 3 p.m. tip off.
