Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Dominates Mount Saint Mary in First Game of the Season

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (1-0) breezed by the Knights (0-1), who struggled to put up a fight, to start off the 2024-25 campaign with a 77-53 victory.

The game started with low scoring and good defense. Both teams tightened up in the paint and points were hard to come by. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd and Pascal Dodard were finding some success by pushing the ball up the court quickly. At the five minute mark, Levi Holton finished a tough layup and completed the three point play to put the Scarlet Raiders up 10-3.

One minute later, Rutgers-Newark gave the crowd their first reason to get up out of their seats, as Jenkins-Floyd found Holton on the backside for an alley-oop layup. The home team maintained a steady lead, and were up 21-7 halfway through the first 20 minutes of play.

The Scarlet Raiders continued to push. Just before the halftime buzzer, Essam Assaf picked up a loose ball with his back to the basket, spun around, and nailed a jump shot off the backboard just before the buzzer. After that exciting sequence, the score was 37-21 going into the break. The Knights needed to find a lot of answers to make a comeback in the second period.

When the action resumed, it did seem as though Mount Saint Mary had made some changes. Two and a half minutes in, they hit their first three point shot of the game. However, the Scarlet Raiders would take the ball right back down the court and Levi Holton would finish with another athletic layup - something he did over and over throughout this game. Holton ended the afternoon with a double-double, 22 points and 10 rebounds, in just 27 minutes of play.

The Rutgers-Newark offense was humming in the second half. Travis Miles hit a mid range jump shot to set the score at 45-26 before the Knights took their full timeout. At this point, it was officially a blowout.

The Scarlet Raiders continued to exert their will on the game, and were leading by 20 with 8:30 remaining. From there, they cruised to an easy victory. A few players made their first ever appearances, including Anthony Farmer, who collected his first career assist and points. It was a satisfying win for Rutgers-Newark men's basketball, and a feel-good way to begin the season.

Men's basketball will play next on Monday, November 11th, when they travel to Morristown, NJ to take on Saint Elizabeth University at 7:00 pm.
