Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Barely Pipped by Stevens

NEWARK, NJ | In a hard fought overtime game, Rutgers-Newark (4-3) fell to the Ducks (5-2) by just a single point. Final score: 81-78.

The offense was looking sharp at the outset. Eli'sha Brown hit a smooth floater and Pascal Dodard nailed a corner three in the opening minutes. The Ducks were hitting shots as well, including a three from Mike Goodall, and it was clear that this would be a close competition.

Dodard was hot—he hit another triple with 15:00 on the clock to make it 10-9. Travis Miles began to chip in as well, with two nice buckets to establish an early seven point advantage.

But Stevens wasn't going anywhere. Senior forward Jack Spellman was making plays in the paint to make sure that the visitors stayed within ten.

The crowd was certainly getting a show. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd found Levi Holton for an alleyoop towards the end of the first half. On the very next possession, Eli'sha Brown came up with a huge block at the rim. At the end of the half, the Scarlet Raiders led by a score of 30-27.

At the start of the second half, it was all Kyle Maddison of Stevens. He hit three three-pointers to give his team a 43-39 advantage. The Ducks' offense was firing on all cylinders, and they continued to build on their lead. With the clock at 11:40, the Scarlet Raiders found themselves down by 11.

The game found its balance with Stevens in front. Both teams pushed forward but the scoreline remained somewhat the same. The Scarlet Raiders needed a boost if they wanted to get back in front.

And they got their boost from Levi Holton. He ended the night with a team-leading 24 points, and his contributions were crucial as the home team stormed their way back into the game. He found Dodard open for three and he knocked it down, putting the Scarlet Raiders up 66-64 with three minutes left in regulation.

As the clock continued to wind down, the game hung in the balance. Shy'heed Jenkins-Floyd hit a clutch three-pointer as the shot clock expired to put Rutgers-Newark up one with 1:30 remaining. Stevens went back down the court and drew a foul, hitting only one free throw to tie the game.

The Scarlet Raiders had the last possession of regulation with the score knotted at 69. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd threw up the last shot at the buzzer, but it was no good. These teams needed an extra 5 minutes to determine a winner.

Stevens seemed to be in control in overtime. They hit their threes and kept the Scarlet Raiders out just enough to establish a four point lead with possession and only a minute on the clock. But Jenkins-Floyd stole the ball as they attempted to bring it up the court and rolled it in to bring the gap to two. Then, on the Ducks' next possession, Essam Assaf drew an offensive foul to win the ball back and give the Scarlet Raiders a chance.

Rutgers-Newark were able to find an open shot. Travis Miles took a three from the corner, but the ball rattled in and out. They fouled on the rebound and managed to get one more heave from Levi Holton, but it was off the mark.

And that was all she wrote. It was an incredible game and a remarkable effort from the Scarlet Raiders, but they just barely could not come out on top.

Men's Basketball is back in action this Wednesday, December 4th, when they resume NJAC play against NJCU. That game will take place at 8:00 PM right here in the Golden Dome.
