Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Scarlet Raiders Bested by NJCU at Home

NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers-Newark (4-4) played hard in a game that was close for the first 35 minutes of play, but the Gothic Knights (5-2) were too much to handle on the occasion. Final score: 78-66.

The Scarlet Raiders jumped out to an early lead courtesy of some nice plays from Travis Miles. He had a hand in each of their first seven points, scoring five and assisting Levi Holton to engineer a 7-2 advantage.

Then NJCU started to wake up. Isaiah Johnson-Williams hit a three-pointer and later three free throws to establish a 9-7 Gothic Knight lead six and a half minutes into the game. The visitors continued to push, marrying a couple quick baskets with solid defense to create a six point gap.

However, the first half continued to swing back and forth. Rutgers-Newark tied it at 19 with seven minutes left in the opening period, and the home team soon went ahead 25-21. Travis Miles hit a tough floater to go up 29-25 with 3:30 to go, but Bakhi Rogers-Robinson returned the favor with a long range turnaround jumper. At the end of the half the score stood at 34-33 in favor of the Gothic Knights.

The second half started out lightning fast, with scoring on both ends of the court. Neither team could separate from their opposition. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd broke the deadlock with a three to take a 41-38 advantage, but Isaiah Johnson-Williams responded with a bucket of his own.

The first two possession lead of the half came courtesy of Raymond Ezike for NJCU with 15:25 on the clock. From there, the Gothic Knights were able to maintain an edge. Avante Gilbert stole the ball and laid it in on the fast break to bring the lead to seven, the largest of the game for either team.

The lead eventually grew to ten but quickly came back down thanks to Jenkins-Floyd. He found David Kema for a basket in the paint with a foul for a three point play which closed the gap to just a single point.

However, the Gothic Knights defended their lead well, and the Scarlet Raiders could not keep up. Jaheim Lewis drove to the cup to make it nine with 1:30 left, and it became too much for the hosts to overcome. It's the first conference loss of the season for Rutgers-Newark, who drop to 4-4 overall on the year.

The Scarlet Raiders will continue conference play this Saturday, December 7th at 1:00 PM. They'll head to Montclair, NJ to take on Montclair State University.
