Baseball Falls to #1 Ranked Johns Hopkins, 7-0

BALTIMORE, MD | The Rutgers-Newark baseball squad opened its 2024 campaign on the road Friday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to #1 Johns Hopkins University.

Rutgers-Newark (0-1) was led by Robert Gonzalez who finished 2-for-3 on the day while Vince Taylor hurled 5.2 innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs. Johns Hopkins (1-0) finished with three multi-hit batters with Cyr leading the way with two RBIs. On the hill, Collins went five innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. 

In the top of the 3rd, the Scarlet Raiders threatened to score after Gilroy Prial hit a one-out single through the left side. Prial eventually made his way over to third where he would ultimately be stranded. Johns Hopkins responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to open their 2024 scoring ledger. In the next inning, Johns Hopkins added to its tally to increase its lead to 3-0 over the Scarlet Raiders. 

In the bottom of the 8th, Johns Hopkins exploded for four runs on just one hit to bring their game total to seven runs on eight hits. In the final frame, Michael Weinbel made it as far as second to put himself in scoring position, however, that's where he would stay as the Scarlet Raiders would go down looking after that to set them back to 0-1 on the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Sunday, February 25 when they host Muhlenberg for a non-conference doubleheader at 11:00 am at Weequahic Park in Newark, NJ.
