Men's Basketball Knocks Off William Paterson, 78-59, to Keep NJAC Hopes Alive

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders men's basketball team secured a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win on Wednesday evening with a 78-59 win over William Paterson at The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (12-11, 8-8) was led by Levi Holton's 28 points and Ayden Brown's career-high 16 rebounds. Both Holton and Brown recorded double-doubles with Holton grabbing 12 rebounds and Brown scoring 10 points. William Paterson (6-17, 1-15) picked up 19 points from MJ Moncrieffe and five rebounds from Valentin Neftali.

Rutgers-Newark opened the game and immediately found themselves in a 5-0 hole as William Paterson found the bottom of the net quickly. Halfway through the first half the Scarlet Raiders had closed the gap before Russell Ayala knotted the game at 12 with a long-range basket. Ayden Brown built off of that basket and increased the Scarlet Raiders lead with a two-point basket to keep their offense flowing. Rutgers-Newark saw its lead disappear as the Pioneers surged to a three-point lead behind Valentin Neftali's three. With the Scarlet Raiders looking at heading into the break on the wrong side of the scoreboard, they flipped a switch and went on a 14-5 run in the final two minutes of the half. Rafeeq Reid capped the run with a tip-in layup at the buzzer to send the Scarlet Raiders into the half with a four-point, 40-36, lead.

Out of the break, William Paterson quickly tied the game at 40. Rutgers-Newark, however, responded with a 10-4 run highlighted by six Holton points. The Pioneers wouldn't go quietly as they cut the lead down to just two with 13:50 remaining in the game. From there, William Paterson's offense slowed to a crawl while the Scarlet Raiders' offense picked up pace which allowed them to push the lead to double digits. With the lead, the Scarlet Raiders tightened up their defense to secure the NJAC win.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, February 10 when they host Rowan University on senior night.
