Medina & Ilderis Record Career Nights in Narrow Loss to William Paterson, 66-62

NEWARK, NJ | Tracey Ilderis and Arlenny Medina had career nights in the narrow loss, 66-62, to William Paterson at The Golden Dome on Wednesday night in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.

Rutgers-Newark (2-21, 1-15) was led offensively by Samiyah Horton's 21 points. Medina tallied a career-high 13 points on 60% shooting while Ilderis just missed out on a double-double with 9 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. William Paterson (9-14, 7-9) collected 27 points from Brianna Smith and a team-high eight rebounds from Mattison Chiera.

Tracey Ilderis was efficient to start the game, going 2-for-2 with a three and a layup which put Rutgers-Newark ahead, 5-2. The Pioneers responded with an 8-4 run which swapped the lead in favor of William Paterson. The Scarlet Raiders and Samiyah Horton chipped away and trailed by five, 20-15, with two minutes to go in the first quarter. Unfortunately for Rutgers-Newark that 15-point marker would be where their offense would stall. William Paterson, led by Brianna Smith, extended its lead over Rutgers-Newark to 12 before the start of the second stanza.

Rutgers-Newark offense regained steam in the second and was able to cut the lead in half after Raihanna Abdus-Salaam converted a layup with 2:27 to go. However, much like the first quarter, the Scarlet Raiders' offense stalled for the final two minutes of play which sent them into the locker room down 10.

In the third quarter, Rutgers-Newark trailed by as much as 14 as they tallied their lowest output of the game out of the break. When the page turned to the 4th, the Scarlet Raiders erased the deficit and trailed 60-58 with 3:31 remaining in the game behind a 9-point spark led by Horton and Medina. Medina continued her career night when she tied the game at 60 with a fast-break layup late in the game. With 38 seconds on the clock, William Paterson went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe giving the Scarlet Raiders a chance to take the lead at the other end. A missed jumper followed by a turnover led to William Paterson at the line once again where they would cash both free-throws to secure the win.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, February 10 when they host Rowan University on senior night.
