Softball Drops Opening Twinbill at The Spring Games

CLERMONT, FL | The Rutgers-Newark softball squad dropped its opening doubleheader of the season as part of The Spring Games in Clermont, FL.

Game 1: New England College 6, Rutgers-Newark 0

Rutgers-Newark (0-1) scattered five hits to open its season led by a pair of singles from Josephine Morales. In the circle, Madison Umlauf (0-1) pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs with two strikeouts. New England College (3-7) used eight hits to score six runs, three of which came from errors. Montero and Gagne paced the team with two hits each while Lemay led the way with 2 RBIs.

New England College did most of its damage in the opening two frames, tallying five of its six runs. In the second, the Scarlet Raiders put Jessica Boyce in scoring position on third, however, that's where her trip around the bases would end as Rutgers-Newark would go on to leave seven runners stranded throughout the game.

In the top of the 7th, the Scarlet Raiders threatened once more to cross the plate but were not able to bring home any runs as they would remain on the pillows to end the game.

Game 2: Curry 10, Rutgers-Newark 1 (6 inn.)

Rutgers-Newark (0-2) stumbled in game two of the day, tallying two hits to score one run while committing a pair of errors. Alexis Claiborne finished the game 2-for-3 while Umlauf (0-2) hurled 1.2 innings of action and allowed five runs on six hits.

Much like game one of the day, the Scarlet Raiders suffered most of the damage in the first two innings of the game. An RBI double in the first got Curry on the board before a homer in the second inning opened the floodgates and allowed Curry to tally four runs to boost its total to 5-0 over Rutgers-Newark.

Curry added five more to their tally in the 5th and 6th innings, bringing its total for the game to 10. Rutgers-Newark notched a tally on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th when Giulia Olear hit a double to put herself in scoring position. Curry's lone error of the game would allow Olear to cross home plate to put Rutgers-Newark on the board.

Rutgers-Newark, however, ran out of time as Curry would get out of the inning and hand Rutgers-Newark its second loss of the season.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Monday, March 11 when they take on Utica College and Plymouth State.
