Softball Falls to Utica & Plymouth State at The Spring Games

CLERMONT, FL | The Rutgers-Newark softball team dropped a pair of games against Utica and Plymouth State on Tuesday. 

Game 1: Utica 10, Rutgers-Newark 6 

Rutgers-Newark (0-3) used eight hits to score six runs and tallied six errors in the loss. Gabriela Forese and Josephine Morales paced the team with two hits each while Alison Miller led the team with 2 RBIs. Kayla Cardozo (0-1) pitched 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs, just two earned, and struck out two batters. Utica (2-1) tallied 11 hits as a team and 10 runs with four hits coming from Maddie Zulager who finished 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs. 

The Scarlet Raiders opened the game with a pair of runs behind an error and a passed ball. Utica would respond with five runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-2 lead after three errors prolonged the inning. Miller helped the Scarlet Raiders knot the game up at five after an RBI single up the middle brought home Jessica Boyce and Laura Abreu

Utica took control of the game by scoring three runs in the 4th and two in the 6th all while holding off the Scarlet Raiders in the top of the 7th. 

Game 2: Plymouth 2, Rutgers-Newark 1

Rutgers-Newark (0-4) scattered five hits and scored one run while committing one error. Marissa Houseknecht led the way, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Madison Umlauf (0-3) tossed seven innings with two strikeouts and one earned run. Plymouth (5-3) was led by Kenzie Bessette (2-4) and Emily Antrim (2-0). 

Plymouth jumped ahead early, tallying a run in the top of the 1st behind an infield RBI. The Panthers doubled up its lead in the top of the 3rd before the Scarlet Raiders responded in the bottom of the 7th with a run of its own. 

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, March 13 when they take on UMass Dartmouth and the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
