Rutgers-Newark Softball Falls to UMass Dartmouth & Wisconsin-Stout

CLERMONT, FL | The Rutgers-Newark softball team suffered a pair of losses today at The Spring Games against UMass Dartmouth and the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Game 1: UMass Dartmouth 13, Rutgers-Newark 4 (5 inn.)

Rutgers-Newark (0-5) used five hits to score four runs with three errors. Marissa Houseknecht was the bright spot in the game going 3-for-3 with with two runs. Mia Lopez, Alex Di Martino, and Alexis Claiborne all added an RBI. Kayla Cardozo (0-3) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed six earned runs with one strikeout. UMass Dartmouth (3-4) plated 13 runs on 12 hits and tallied two errors. Perregaux finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs while Takasugi went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Turley (1-2) went the distance (5 inn.) and struck out four batters with two earned runs. 

UMass Dartmouth opened the game with a run in the top of the frame and held Rutgers-Newark scoreless through one. UMass Dartmouth opened the game with an explosive six-run inning with three runs and one error. Kalyna Figol opened the inning with an error before advancing to third via a double from Houseknecht. Alison Miller would walk to load the bases allowing Claiborne to find a gap in the outfield to score their first marker of the game. Rutgers-Newark added a second tally when they capitalized on a wild pitch. Di Martino kept the scoring going with an RBI single to center field. 

UMass Dartmouth stayed in the zone and tallied another five runs to extend its lead over the Scarlet Raiders then held them to just one run for the remainder of the game, ending it in five innings. 

Game 2: Wisconsin-Stout 4, Rutgers-Newark 3

Rutgers-Newark (0-6) scattered 9 hits, tallied three runs, and committed three errors. Houseknecht and Mariah Rimas-McManus led the team with two hits each. Madison Umlauf (0-3) tossed six innings and struck out two batters with two earned runs. Wisconsin-Stout (11-3) tallied six hits and scored four runs. Holden paced the team with two hits and 2 RBIs in the win. 

The Scarlet Raiders opened the game with a pair of runs, putting them in the driver's seat. Gabriela Forese scored a run with a single up the middle before Keelin O'Brien hit an RBI single down the left-field line to score Forese. Wisconsin-Stout leveled play in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. Rutgers-Newark added another run in the top of the 2nd and held onto that lead until Wisconsin-Stout plated two runs in the bottom of the 6th to steal the win away from the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Thursday, March 14 when they take on Ohio Wesleyan and Washington College.
