Claiborne Extends Hit Streak as Rutgers-Newark Softball Falls to Ohio Wesleyan and Washington College

CLERMONT, FL | The Rutgers-Newark softball team suffered a pair of losses to Ohio Wesleyan and Washington College on Thursday at The Spring Games.

Game 1: Ohio Wesleyan 16, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5 inn.)

Rutgers-Newark (0-7) scattered four hits and tallied a pair of errors. Kayla Cardozo and Gabriela Forese each finished 1-for-2 while Alexis Claiborne extended her hit streak to four games in a row. Ohio Wesleyan (4-1) tallied 16 runs on 16 hits and played clean softball in the field with no errors. Alyssa Back finished 4-for-5 with an RBI while Vanden Eynden went 4-for-3 with 3 RBIs.

Ohio Wesleyan got on the board early with four runs in the top of the first inning before doubling that mark in the second. After two more runs crossed for Ohio Wesleyan in the top of the third, Claiborne hit a lead-off single to try to spark the offense, however, groundouts would end the inning.

The Scarlet Raiders got another chance to tally a run when Forese hit a one-out double but would be stranded as Cardozo and Dana Rene would get sent back to the dugout. Ohio Wesleyan added six more runs over the final two innings to secure the win.

Game 2: Washington College 13, Rutgers-Newark 1 (5 inn.)

Rutgers-Newark (0-8) used four hits to score one run against Washington College. Keelin O'Brien finished 1-for-2 with an RBI while Mariah Rimas-McManus, Kalyna Figol, and Claiborne secured the other hits. Washington College (7-7-1) tallied 13 runs on 12 hits led by Lilly Cook.

After a scoreless opening inning, Washington College tallied five runs in the bottom of the 2nd before following that up with eight runs in the bottom of the 3rd to push its lead out to 13-0. Rutgers-Newark responded with a run in the top of the 4th when Rimas-McManus was brought home on an RBI double by O'Brien.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Friday, March 15 where they will close out their Florida trip against, Fredonia and Albertus Magnus.
