Rutgers-Newark Powers Past SJNY in Non-Conference Twinbill

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball team returned to its home turf this afternoon in a twinbill against St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn. Rutgers-Newark won the pair of games behind a 19-3 and 10-4 scoreline.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 19, SJNY 3

Rutgers-Newark (9-4) used 17 hits to score 19 runs while Chase Ostrowski (2-0) picked up his second win of the season. The Scarlet Raiders were led by Eric Recchia (3-for-5, 3 RBIs) and Matthew Storch (3-for-4, 1 RBI). SJNY (2-8) scattered 11 hits and tallied two runs to go along with four fielding errors.

Storch got the scoring started for the Scarlet Raiders with an RBI double to score E. Recchia. Storch wouldn't be stranded long as Connor Baksh quickly brought him home with an RBI double of his own. The reigning NJAC Rookie of the Week, Daniel Fedorco, remained hot and tallied the third run of the inning with a single to right field which allowed Baksh to cross the dish.

The floodgates opened for the Scarlet Raiders in the 2nd inning and that is where most of the damage was done. Rutgers-Newark tallied 12 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to push its lead out to 15-0. The 12-run inning was highlighted by a 3 RBI homer by E. Recchia, his 5th of the season.

Rutgers-Newark's offense would cool off for three innings before returning to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th. Ethan Calcano made the most of his opportunity and hit a 2 RBI double to right field to increase Rutgers-Newark's lead. In the 7th, it was a combination of Reid Duffus and Dario Morales who plated another pair of runs for the Scarlet Raiders.

SJNY found its way onto the scoreboard in the top of the 8th with a trio of runs, however, that's where their rally would end as Kahn closed out the game to secure the win.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 10, SJNY 4

Rutgers-Newark (10-4) recorded 14 hits and tallied 10 runs while committing one error in the win. Storch led the Scarlet Raiders, going 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs while Fedorco finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. On the hill, the reigning NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week, Matthew King (3-0) went six innings with eight strikeouts. SJNY (2-9) tallied six hits and four runs and committed an error in the field.

In game two, it was the Bears who took the lead in the top of the 4th. SJNY capitalized on an error allowing them to continue the inning which led to a pair of runs. Rutgers-Newark responded with a trio of runs in the bottom of the frame behind a 2 RBI double by Fedorco. Once again, the Scarlet Raiders used one inning to blow the game open and they did just that in the bottom of the 5th when they plated six runs. Storch hit a bases-clearing triple to thrust the Scarlet Raiders into the lead.

Rutgers-Newark added an insurance run in the 7th via a solo homer by Michael Weinbel, his second of the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, March 19 when they host John Jay College at 3:30 pm.
