Softball Drops Narrow Losses to St. Joseph's - Long Island

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball squad dropped a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon against St. Joseph's University-Long Island. 

Game 1: SJNY-LI 5, Rutgers-Newark 4

Rutgers-Newark (2-11) used five hits to score five runs but committed four errors in the field. Keelin O'Brien paced the Scarlet Raiders, finishing 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.  In the circle, Madison Umlauf (1-6) tossed 2.1 innings and allowed four earned runs with one strikeout. Madison DiGiorgio came in as relief and hurled 4.2 innings and tallied five strikeouts. SJNY-LI (3-6) scattered 13 hits and tallied two errors while scoring six runs. Kiernan led the team with 2 RBIs while Flannery finished 2-for-4. In the circle, Herzing (2-3) tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first via a sacrifice fly to left field which scored an unearned run. They then returned to the scoreboard in the top of the 2nd with a five-run outburst aided by three fielding errors. Rutgers-Newark, however, plated four runs in the bottom of the frame to bring themselves within two. Alexis Claiborne hit a lead-off single before Mia Lopez reached on an error that advanced Claiborne over to third. Mariah Rimas-McManus brought Claiborne home with a single through the left side which eventually set up an O'Brien 2 RBI triple to right field. 

The Scarlet Raiders held the Golden Eagles scoreless for the remainder of the game and even cut the lead down to one behind an Alison Miller single to left field. In the bottom of the 7th, the Scarlet Raiders would go down to preserve the win for St. Joseph's - Long Island.

Game 2: SJNY-LI 5, Rutgers-Newark 4

Rutgers-Newark (2-12) recorded three hits and tallied four runs. Kalyna Figol finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs in the loss while Madison Umlauf (1-7) pitched three innings with one strikeout in relief of Kayla Cardozo. SJNY-LI (4-6) used 9 hits to score five runs led by Salvatto who went 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs. 

The Scarlet Raiders took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd when Miller was walked home. In the 3rd, Figol hit her first collegiate home run to push Rutgers-Newark ahead, 3-0.

The Golden Eagles leveled the playing field in the top of the 5th when they plated three runs on three hits. The Scarlet Raiders inched ahead in the following inning, via a wild pitch to go up 4-3. SJNY-LI responded in the top of the 7th with a 2 RBI homer from Salvatto to leapfrog the Scarlet Raiders for the lead, 5-4. Rutgers-Newark would go on to hit into a double play which ended the game as the Golden Eagles completed the comeback.
