Softball Sweeps William Paterson in NJAC Opener

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball team earned two wins to start its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) campaign against William Paterson University.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 7, William Paterson 5

Rutgers-Newark (3-12, 1-0) scattered 11 hits and tallied seven runs in the win. Kayla Cardozo (3-for-3, 1 RBI) and Gabriela Forese (3-for-3, 1 RBI) each tallied three hits in the win. In the circle, Madison DiGiorgio (1-0) picked up her first win of the season in 4.1 innings of action with just three hits allowed. William Paterson (0-13, 0-1) was led by Haley Weinberger who finished 3-for-3.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Scarlet Raiders before Rutgers-Newark jump started its offense in the bottom of the 2nd with four runs. Mariah Rimas-McManus doubled to left field to plate two runs before Cardozo capped the inning with an RBI single. The Pioneers regained the lead with two in the top half of the frame before Rutgers-Newark once again used a bundle of runs to take the lead.

In the 5th, the Scarlet Raiders capitalized on errors to score what would turn out to be the game-winning runs.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 5, William Paterson 3

Rutgers-Newark (4-12, 2-0) used six hits to score five runs behind two hits from Keelin O'Brien. William Paterson (0-14, 0-2) tallied eight hits and an error in game two.

The Scarlet Raiders got on the board early and often, plating two runs in each of the first two innings. A 2 RBI double by O'Brien started the scoring in the first and was then followed up by Rimas-McManus and Cardozo RBIs in the second. The Pioneers cut into the lead in the top of the 4th by scoring a pair of runs but Rutgers-Newark quickly responded with a run to keep William Paterson at bay.
