Softball Blanked by Stockton in NJAC Twinbill

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball squad dropped a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games to Stockton University this afternoon at Frederick Douglass Field.

Game 1: Stockton 8, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5 inn.)

Rutgers-Newark (4-13, 2-1) was held to just one hit and tallied four errors in the 8-0 loss of the opening game of the series. Kayla Cardozo (1-for-2) was the lone Scarlet Raider to record a hit. Cardozo (2-5) also tossed 3.0 innings in the circle with five earned runs and one strikeout. Stockton (10-7, 3-0) saw Nerina Tramp (7-1) throw a one-hitter with seven strikeouts. Offensively, the Ospreys were led by Alexa Panagopoylos who finished 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

The Ospreys opened its scoring ledger early, plating three runs in the opening inning via a 2 RBI single from Dignam. After a scoreless inning, Stockton got back on the board in the top of the 3rd when the Scarlet Raiders began to be plagued by errors. With a 5-0 lead in hand, the Ospreys tallied three more runs over the final two innings to end the game in five innings.

Game 2: Stockton 4, Rutgers-Newark 0

Rutgers-Newark (4-14, 2-2) doubled its hit total from game one thanks to hits by Giulia Olear and Cardozo once again. In the circle, Madison Umlauf (1-8) tossed a complete game and tallied one strikeout and one earned run. Stockton (11-7, 4-0) scattered seven hits and tallied four runs in the win.

Stockton was first to plate a run in the top of the 2nd, capitalizing on three errors by the Scarlet Raiders. The error bug would strike the Scarlet Raiders again in the 4th as they would commit another pair, allowing the Ospreys to score another pair of runs.

Down four runs, Cardozo hit a lead-off double in the bottom of the 7th but would ultimately be stranded on the pillows as the Scarlet Raiders would pick up three outs to end the rally.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Sunday, March 7 when they travel to take on Montclair State University.
