Softball Splits NJAC Twinbill With Montclair

MONTCLAIR, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader with Montclair State University on Sunday afternoon. 

Game 1: Montclair 10, Rutgers-Newark 2

Rutgers-Newark (4-15, 2-3) tallied six hits and scored two runs in game one while committing four errors. Marissa Houseknecht paced the team with two hits while Keelin O'Brien (1-for-3, 1 RBI) and Mia Lopez (1-for-3, 1 RBI) brought home the two runs for the Scarlet Raiders. Montclair (12-11, 2-3) scored 10 runs on 16 hits behind a three-hit, 3 RBI performance from Stephanie Seretis. 

The Red Hawks did a majority of its damage in the opening two innings, scoring three in the first and four in the second highlighted by two triples.  Rutgers-Newark recorded their first run of the game in the top of the 4th, using an error to extend the inning. Lopez singled to left field to bring home Alison Miller for the Scarlet Raiders' first run of the game. O'Brien singled to right field to bring home Mariah Rimas-McManus to double their tally. 

Montclair would go on to add two more runs over two innings to close out the game. 

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 4, Montclair 3

Rutgers-Newark (5-15, 3-3) scattered eight hits and tallied four runs in the NJAC win over Montclair in game two. O'Brien finished 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs while Kayla Cardozo went 2-for-4 from the lead-off spot. Madison Umlauf (2-8) tossed seven innings and allowed three earned runs. Montclair (12-12, 3-3) was led by Kayla Cosentino at the plate who finished 2-for-4, 1 RBI. 

The Scarlet Raiders took an early lead via a solo homer by Keelin O'Brien. Montclair responded quickly with three runs in the bottom of the 3rd to jump in the lead 3-1. Rutgers-Newark tied the game up in the 5th when they capitalized on an error to plate two runs. Josephine Morales sealed the game for the Scarlet Raiders in the top of the 7th with an RBI single down the right-field line. Umlauf was then able to shut down the Red Hawks and secure their third NJAC win of the season.
