Cardozo Homers In Doubleheader Loss to Kean

UNION, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders softball team dropped a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games to Kean University on Tuesday afternoon.

Game 1: Kean 19, Rutgers-Newark 0

Rutgers-Newark (5-16, 3-4) tallied five hits but suffered three errors in the field. Madison DiGiorgio (1-1) got the nod in the circle and allowed five earned runs with two strikeouts. Kean (16-10, 4-3) scored 19 runs on 19 hits led by Maya Thompson (3-for-4, 5 RBI).

The Scarlet Raiders committed all three errors in the first inning, allowing Kean to open their scoring ledger in a big way by plating 10 runs. The Cougars would add two more runs in the 2nd before exploding for another seven runs in the bottom of the 3rd.

Rutgers-Newark scattered three of their five hits in the top of the 4th when Janiyah Smith, Laura Abreu, and Mia Lopez all secured a single but were not able to plate any runs.

Game 2: Kean 5, Rutgers-Newark 2

Rutgers-Newark (5-17, 3-5) dispersed seven hits and scored two runs behind Keelin O'Brien (2-for-3) and Kayla Cardozo (1-for-3, 1 RBI). Kean (17-10, 5-3) was led by Eliza Filus (2-for-3, 2 RBI) at the plate and Olivia Quercia (3-0) in the circle with one strikeout and two hits.

Much like game one, the Cougars came out of the gates hot, tallying all five of their runs in the first two innings. The Scarlet Raiders got on the board in the top of the 3rd when Marissa Houseknecht recorded an infield single which brought home Giulia Olear. After a scoreless inning, the Scarlet Raiders plated another run when Cardozo hit a solo homer to left field.

The Scarlet Raiders' offense was held in check for the final inning, allowing the Cougars to hang onto the win.
