NJCU Spoils Softball's Senior Day

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball team had its senior day spoiled by New Jersey City University at Frederick Douglass Field on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: NJCU 4, Rutgers-Newark 1

Rutgers-Newark (5-18, 3-6) was held to two hits and tallied three errors in the loss to the Gothic Knights. Mariah Rimas-McManus (1-for-3) and Keelin O'Brien (1-for-2) picked up the two hits for the Scarlet Raiders while Madison DiGiorgio (1-2) pitched four innings with one strikeout and two earned runs. NJCU (8-14, 2-7) used seven hits to plate four runs and played clean softball in the field. Alonah Olden (2-for-4) was the lone player to have a multi-hit game. In the circle, Sidnie Dabbadie (5-6) pitched a complete game with five strikeouts.

The Gothic Knights jumped out in front in the top of the first inning with a single up the middle by Villanueva. Rutgers-Newark responded in the next frame with a run of their own when Mia Lopez was hit by a pitch to score the run.

In the remaining frames, the Scarlet Raiders offense was held in check as they tallied just one hit.

Game 2: NJCU 11, Rutgers-Newark 2 (5 inn.)

Rutgers-Newark (5-19, 3-7) scattered eight hits in game two and tallied two runs while committing just one error. Kalyna Figol (2-for-3) and Josephine Morales (2-for-3) were the lone multi-hitters for the Scarlet Raiders. Madison Umlauf (2-10) pitched three innings and tallied five strikeouts in the loss. NJCU (9-14, 3-7) tallied 16 hits and scored 11 runs to run rule the Scarlet Raiders for the first time since 2009. Emily Tunney finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Sam Miller (2-7) struck one batter out.

Once again NJCU was the first to the scoreboard, plating a run by Villanueva's single to right center. Rutgers-Newark took the lead in the bottom half of the frame when they capitalized on an error. Rimas-McManus reached on a fielding error to allow Kayla Cardozo to score before O'Brien scored Rimas-McManus with a throwing error as well. Both teams would go scoreless in the 2nd frame before NJCU exploded for 10 runs over the next two innings to secure the win in their favor.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, April 16 when they host Ramapo College at 3:00 pm.
