Softball Falls to No. 18 Ramapo College

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball team squared off against No. 18 Ramapo College this afternoon at Frederick Douglass Field as part of a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader.

Game 1: Ramapo 7, Rutgers-Newark 0

Rutgers-Newark (5-20, 3-8) collected four hits and played clean softball in the field. Kayla Cardozo (1-for-3), Marissa Houseknecht (1-for-3), Keelin O'Brien (1-for-3), and Kalyna Figol (1-for-3) all tallied a hit for the team. In the circle, Kayla Cardozo (2-7) pitched 1.2 innings with one strikeout and five earned runs. Ramapo (23-4, 10-1) scattered 11 hits and tallied seven runs in the win led by Katie Rygiel (3-for-4, 2 RBI). In the circle for the Roadrunners, Marissa DiPaolo (10-0) kept her record unblemished with a five-inning, one-strikeout gem.

Both teams left runners on the bases in the 1st inning as neither team was able to plate any runs. The Roadrunners would burst the game open in the 2nd inning using three walks and three hits to tally five runs. After the 2nd inning, the game would return to its dormant form before Ramapo picked up two more runs in the top of the 7th to close out the game.

Game 2: Ramapo 7, Rutgers-Newark 1

Rutgers-Newark (5-21, 3-9) increased its hit total from game one with seven hits, however, committed three errors in the second game. Marissa Houseknecht finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored. In the circle, Madison Umlauf (2-10) hurled 5.1 innings and tallied three strikeouts with three earned runs. Ramapo (24-4, 11-1) was led by Ysabellah Otero who finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs while Kassy Stefanski (9-3) picked up the win with five innings pitched and one strikeout.

Ramapo got to the board early with two runs in the top of the opening frame thanks to a 2 RBI double by Avery Kontura. The Roadrunners would double their tally with another pair of runs in the 2nd to put them up 4-0 through two innings.

Rutgers-Newark plated their first run of the game in the 6th when Houseknecht hit a lead-off single through the left side before moving over to third via a hit from O'Brien. Houseknecht would eventually cross home after some savvy baserunning, taking advantage of a passed ball to score the lone run of the game for the Scarlet Raiders.

Ramapo, much like game one, added three runs in the final inning of play to secure the victory and complete the sweep of the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Thursday, April 18 when they hit the road to take on Drew University at 3:00 pm.
