Softball's Bats Remain Cold Against Drew as They Drop Non-Conference Doubleheader

MADISON, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball squad suffered its eighth straight loss this afternoon in non-conference action to Drew University, 8-0, 11-3.

Game 1: Drew 8, Rutgers-Newark 0

Rutgers-Newark (5-22) was held to two hits and tallied four errors in the loss. Kayla Cardozo (1-for-2) and Kalyna Figol (1-for-2) tallied the pair of hits for the Scarlet Raiders. In the circle, Cardozo (2-8) pitched 1.1 innings with one strikeout and four earned runs. Drew (15-12) scattered 14 hits and scored eight runs behind a 3-for-4, 3 RBI day from Meierhofe. Saunders (2-1) pitched a complete game shutout with four strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

The Rangers opened the game with three runs in the bottom half of the frame capped by an error by the Scarlet Raiders. Drew increased its lead to five when the Scarlet Raiders suffered another error to allow the inning to continue. With the lead in hand, Drew tallied one run in each of the final three innings to end the game in five innings.

Game 2: Drew 11, Rutgers-Newark 3

Rutgers-Newark (5-23) used six hits to score three runs but couldn't escape the error bug as they tallied three in game two. Marissa Houseknecht (2-for-4) and Kalyna Figol (2-for-3) recorded four of the team's six hits. Drew (16-12) was led by Bradley (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Evans-Las (3-for-4) at the plate.

Much like game one, the Rangers scored runs early, taking a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. Drew increased their lead to 6-0 behind a four-run third inning that saw the Scarlet Raiders tally three errors.

In the fourth, the Scarlet Raiders plated their first runs of the doubleheader. Houseknecht doubled to center field to advance Jessica Boyce before Figol singled up the middle to bring Boyce home. Alison Miller refused to leave Houseknecht stranded and brought her home to bring the Scarlet Raiders' tally to two.

Both teams would score in the fifth before Drew closed out the game in the sixth with an RBI single.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, April 20 when they take on Rowan University at 1:00 pm.
