Softball Loses to Rowan in NJAC Twinbill

GLASSBORO, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball team fell to Rowan University on Saturday afternoon in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play.

Game 1: Rowan 8, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5 inn.)

Rutgers-Newark (5-24, 3-10) tallied four hits and one error. The Scarlet Raiders had four players, Giulia Olear (1-for-2), Marissa Houseknecht (1-for-2), Alexis Claiborne (1-for-2), and Mariah Rimas McManus (1-for-2) pick up the teams hits. Rowan (26-7, 11-2) scored eight runs on 11 hits behind a 2-for-3, 2 RBI day from Abigail Pawlowski.

Rowan scored one run in each of the first three innings before tallying four runs in the bottom of the fourth behind an RBI triple from MacNair. Pawlowski would capitalize on the lone error of the game to score the fourth run of the inning and put Rowan one run away from the mercy rule. The Profs would find that final run in the bottom of the fifth to close out game one.

Game 2: Rowan 12, Rutgers-Newark 1 (5 inn.)

Rutgers-Newark (5-25, 3-11) used four hits to score one run while committing two errors in the game. Keelin O'Brien finished 1-for-1 with an RBI while Olear, Rimas-McManus, and Kalyna Figol all added a hit. Rowan (27-7, 12-2) scored 12 runs on 12 hits and was led by McKenzie Melvin who finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.

The Scarlet Raiders were first to tally a run in game two. Olear opened the game with a lead-off single before O'Brien doubled to right center to allow Olear to cross home plate to take a 1-0 lead over the Profs. The scoring would end there, however, as Rowan scored 9 runs over the opening two innings before adding three in the fourth to initiate the run rule and end the game.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, April 23 when they head down to Ewing, NJ to take on The College of New Jersey.
