EWING, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball team dropped a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games to The College of New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon.
Game 1: TCNJ 13, Rutgers-Newark 2 (5 inn.)
Rutgers-Newark (5-26, 3-12) was led by Giulia Olear (2-for-3) and Kalyna Figol (2-for-2, 2 RBI) at the plate. In the circle, Madison DiGiorgio (1-5) pitched 1.2 innings with one strikeout and eight earned runs. TCNJ (22-9) scattered 12 hits and scored 13 runs behind a three-hit performance by Julia Kinnally.
The Lions scored in every inning against the Scarlet Raiders but did most of the damage in the first two innings, tallying eight runs in the first two frames. Rutgers-Newark would get on the board in the top of the third via a 2 RBI triple from the freshman Figol to cut the lead down to just six runs. An error in the third let the Lions plate two more runs to keep the run rule active. The error-plagued Scarlet Raiders suffered another pair of errors in the fourth which allowed TCNJ to score three runs and push their game total to 13.
Game 2: TCNJ 14, Rutgers-Newark 1 (5 inn.)
Rutgers-Newark (5-27, 3-13) was held to two hits in the second game and tallied three errors. TCNJ (23-9) picked up where they left off in game one and plated 14 runs on 14 hits led by Kaci Neveling.
TCNJ held a 5-0 lead through two innings but exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third as they took advantage of a pair of Rutgers-Newark errors. Before TCNJ extended their lead, Mariah Rimas-McManus secured the lone run of the game for Rutgers-Newark with a single to left field. In the final two frames, the Scarlet Raiders would go down in order to prevent any rally attempt as their playoff hopes will come down to Saturday as they vie for their first NJAC Playoff berth in program history.
