NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball team split with non-conference opponents, Hunter College, Thursday afternoon at Frederick Douglass Field. With the split, Rutgers-Newark moved to 6-28 while Hunter moved to 8-14.
Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 6, Hunter 2
The Scarlet Raiders opened the game with four runs in the bottom of the first. Kayla Cardozo plated the first run of the game with a fielder's choice RBI before Keelin O'Brien hit a two-RBI double to push their lead to 3-0. Alison Miller capped the inning with an RBI single to close out the inning with a 4-0 lead. The Hawks opened their scoring ledger with a run in the top of the frame before the Scarlet Raiders matched with a run of their own.Â
O'Brien added another RBI to her tally with an RBI single up the middle to score Mariah Rimas-McManus. Hunter would go on to tally another run but Madison Umlauf (3-12) shut down any rally to give the Scarlet Raiders a win.Â
Game 2: Hunter 3, Rutgers-Newark 0
In the second game, the Scarlet Raiders' offense was held in check as they tallied just four hits. The Hunter College Hawks scattered their three runs over three innings to complete the split.Â
Rutgers-Newark will return to action on Saturday, April 27 when they host Rutgers-Camden for a spot in the NJAC Tournament.
