Men's Volleyball Brushes Hunter Aside, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | Martin Chromulak paced the Scarlet Raiders with 10 kills to sweep Hunter College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-21) on Friday night at The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (9-8) hit .235 as a squad while tallying 32 kills. Aleks Kolodziej added five kills and Derek Au dished out 24 assists. Defensively, Aidan Apito secured a team-high six digs. Hunter College (7-7) was led by Muhammad Al-Amine Mbaye's 9 kills and Cooper Moran's 22 assists.

The Scarlet Raiders took the opening set powered by a strong 7-0 run to open the match. Later in the set, Hunter put its best attempt forward at cutting the lead down with a 3-0 run, 22-17, however, two errors set up Sean Spring to close out the set with an ace and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two saw the set open with back-and-forth points before Chromulak ignited an 8-1 run to put the Scarlet Raiders ahead 18-10. Back-to-back kills by Spring propelled Rutgers-Newark further ahead as they secured the second win of the match.

Once again the Scarlet Raiders used a strong opening to set the tone of the set. In the third, Juan Silva capped a 7-0 run with a pair of service aces to take an 11-2 lead. Hunter College responded with a run of its own, cutting the lead down to 13-11. The Hawks continued to hang around until kills by Au and Lucas Blanco set the Scarlet Raiders back on the winning path. Vincent Lopez and Chromulak would secure the final two kills of the match as Rutgers-Newark would claim its 9th win of the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, March 9 when they host #17 Messiah at 1:00 pm.
