NEWARK, NJ | Matthew King and Vince Taylor held #19 Rowan to 9 hits and seven runs as the Scarlet Raiders upset the Profs 8-7 at Weequahic Park in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action. With the win the Scarlet Raiders improved to 18-18, 3-13 while Rowan fell to 22-11, 8-8.
The Scarlet Raiders were led by Robert Gonzalez (3-for-4, 2 RBIs), Connor Baksh (2-for-4, 2 RBIs), and Paul Recchia (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) at the plate. King picked up his fifth win of the season to bring his impressive freshman season record to 5-2. Rowan was led by Marco Mannino who finished 2-for-2 with three runs.
In the first four innings, the pitchers battled to a scoreless draw, however, the Profs broke the game open in the fifth with a pair of runs. Rutgers-Newark responded in the following inning with four runs on six hits sparked by an RBI single from Daniel Fedorco. Devin Rojas capped the inning, with a base on balls RBI to give the Scarlet Raiders a 4-2 lead.
Rutgers-Newark doubled its tally in the following inning, scoring four more runs on four hits and two errors. Baksh highlighted the inning with a 2 RBI double down the left field which further increased the Scarlet Raiders' lead. Rowan made a last-ditch effort in the top of the 9th when they scored four runs to cut the lead down to one before Taylor forced a pop-out to end the game.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, April 27 when they hit the road to take one Kean in the season finale.
