CAMDEN, NJ - It was a battle of the Rutgers' campuses tonight down in Camden. It all came down to the wire, where Rutgers-Camden, the home team, slipped past Rutgers-Newark with a 41-40 victory.
The Raiders went 5-for-18 from the field in the first quarter to take an early 12-9 lead over their foes the Raptors.
While the point tally in the second quarter was the same with each team scoring 12 points apiece, it was Rutgers-Camden who out-rebounded Rutgers-Newark 14 to 9. Despite the low scoring first-two quarters of play, it was the Raiders who held the 24-21 advantage at halftime.
The Raiders netted five field goals in the third quarter, including going on a 9-2 run to start, keeping just one step ahead of the Raptors, who remained close never letting the game get too far out of hand.
It all changed in the final 10 minutes of play. The Raiders went cold in the fourth quarter, scoring just four points (2-for-21), giving the Raptors the opening they needed to secure the win on their home court.
Rutgers-Newark (3-14, 0-10 NJAC) was led in scoring by Sanaa Brodie who had 14 points, nine rebounds, and five steals.
Rahzirah Blocker had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead Rutgers-Camden (7-10, 3-7 NJAC). Hope Goodwine had 14 points and Courtney Edmundo grabbed 15 rebounds.
The Raiders return home on Saturday, Jan. 25 against Montclair State in game one of the doubleheader with the men beginning at 4 p.m.
