Holton Hoists the Scarlet Raiders to Victory

NEWARK, NJ | With perhaps the best performance of his career, Levi Holton almost single handedly powered Rutgers-Newark to a 71-68 win over William Paterson in what must've been their most entertaining game of the 2024-25 season.

Travis Miles secured the first points of the night with a short-range jump shot. The home team found some early momentum, forcing a timeout out of William Paterson after Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd grabbed a steal and dished to Eli'sha Brown for the transition layup.

After the timeout, the two teams could barely be separated. At 11:39 in the first half, they were level at 14. At 6:45, the Pioneers held a two point lead at 23-21.

Towards the end of the half, they were trading one point leads. Greg Jones laid in from a missed Donovan Crawford shot to put Rutgers-Newark up 29-28. Jenkins-Floyd took another steal to the cup to make it 31-30.

This back and forth continued until the final buzzer of the opening period. William Paterson took a 33-32 lead into halftime.

The Scarlet Raiders brought the energy to start the second period. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd hit Levi Holton on an alley-oop to give the Scarlet Raiders a 36-33 edge. But the Pioneers were able to match the intensity—Neftali Valentin drilled a triple to even the score.

Eventually, William Paterson managed to build a marginal advantage. They led 50-44 until Nate Pluviose finished from behind the arc to make it a three point game. The Scarlet Raiders kept up the pace, including another Jenkins-Floyd to Holton alley-oop, but the Pioneers' three point shooting kept them in front.

As the clock kept winding down, Holton put the team on his back. He just kept finding his way to the basket and there was nothing the Pioneers could do about it. He ended the night with an incredible career-high 38 points, and four of those came as clutch free throws right at the end.

This game really came down to the wire. The lead switched back and forth several times, with many big free throws taken. A Levi Holton rebound off of a missed Eli'sha Brown foul shot put Rutgers-Newark in pole position to win.

In the end, the Scarlet Raiders had just enough gas to get over the line. William Paterson had a chance right at the end to tie it with a three, but they couldn't get the shot off. It was an absolute nailbiter, and a hard-earned win for the home team!

The Scarlet Raiders will play again this Saturday, February 8th. They'll travel to Ewing, NJ to take on TCNJ at 3:00 PM.
