SB Space Coast Games Day 2

Game Recap: Softball |

Scarlet Raiders Pick Up First Win of the Season in Dramatic Fashion

MELBOURNE, FL | Softball completed another pair of competitions against Grinnell and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. They fell to Pioneers in the early afternoon, but made up for it with an incredible walk-off victory over the Trailblazers.

Game 1: Grinnell 11, Rutgers-Newark 4

The Scarlet Raiders got the bats going for this game, as they had nine total hits. The offense began in the first inning with Keelin O'Brien doubling to bring home Kristin Kloss. However, Grinnell responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame. The Pioneers pulled ahead in the third after Lexi Herrick poked an RBI single into left center.

The fourth inning was quiet, but everything kicked off in the fifth. Mariah Rimas-McManus and Marissa Houseknecht drove in a run each, and O'Brien picked up her second RBI of the game to cap off a three run rally for Rutgers-Newark. But Grinnell had something else in store - they exploded for nine runs in response, leaving the Scarlet Raiders seven runs behind.

Rutgers-Newark was only able to muster a single hit in each of the final two innings, and could not find the offensive firepower necessary to overcome the deficit. Grinnell took the game to improve on 3-5, while the Scarlet Raiders dropped to 0-3.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 12, MCLA 11

Both teams scored in the first inning, but it was the Scarlet Raiders who took the lead 3-1. A double steal saw Kristin Kloss snatch a run, followed by an RBI double from Maddy Haack.

However, the early scoring was not over. MCLA drove in three runs in the top of the second, taking their lead back. Rutgers-Newark responded once again, as the runs kept racking up. Keelin O'Brien knocked an RBI triple, bringing home three baserunners in the process. After two innings, the Scarlet Raiders led by a score of 6-4.

After Rutgers-Newark tacked on two more in the third, the Trailblazers began storming back. They plated two in the fourth as well as the fifth, and three in the sixth. This put the Scarlet Raiders down by three runs going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

With their backs against the wall, the Scarlet Raiders put runners on base. Mariah Rimas-McManus and Keelin O'Brien each brought home one runner, then Josephine Morales clubbed a triple to score them both. Rutgers-Newark scored four in the bottom of the seventh and walked off MCLA in a come from behind victory!
