SB Spring Games Day 3

Game Recap: Softball |

Scarlet Raiders Fall to the Blugolds and Trailblazers in Spring Games

MELBOURNE, FL | Rutgers-Newark Softball picked up another pair of losses in Florida. An 0-8 scoreline vs UW-Eau Claire (10-2) and 4-12 against MCLA (4-6) leaves the Scarlet Raiders with a 1-5 record on the season so far.

Game 1: UWEC 8, Rutgers-Newark 0

The Scarlet Raiders offense could not get off the ground in the first game of the day. They only managed one hit which came from Kalyna Figol in the second inning.

The Blugolds got on the board in the first. Molly Marquardt doubled to right field, bringing Paige Lathrop in to score.

That 1-0 advantage would hold all the way up until the fifth inning. Madison Umlauf powered through the first four frames, only allowing one run. However, in the fifth UWEC padded their lead quite a bit. They put up a seven spot, making the score 8-0 and ending the game on the run-ahead rule.

Game 2: MCLA 12, Rutgers-Newark 4

In a rematch of the exhilarating walk-off win for the Scarlet Raiders two days ago, MCLA came ready for revenge. They grabbed the lead in the first inning, making it 1-0. Alison Miller evened it up in the bottom of the second, plating Kayla Cardozo with an RBI single.

The Trailblazers broke the deadlock in the very next frame, bringing around three runners in the top of the third inning. They added to their lead in the fourth with a four spot, suddenly extending their lead to seven. Rutgers-Newark responded with two in the bottom half, including another Alison Miller RBI and a sacrifice fly from Mariah Rimas-McManus.

But it wasn't meant to be for the Scarlet Raiders. Four more runs came home for MCLA in the top of the sixth, and the home team only had one more run to offer in return. It was a much stronger offensive showing for Rutgers-Newark than the prior game, but they couldn't outhit the Trailblazers.
