Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Scarlet Raiders Split Weekend Tri-Match in Virginia

BUENA VISTA, VA | Men's Volleyball (18-8) broke even this Saturday. They started their day with a 3-0 loss to Southern Virginia (23-0), but they made up for it with a thrilling 3-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan (5-4) that went the full distance.

Match 1: Southern Virginia 3, Rutgers-Newark 1 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23)

Things were tight to start the first set. The Scarlet Raiders grabbed a three point lead at 8-5, but the Knights came right back to tie it up. That was the largest gap before Southern Virginia won four straight to go up 20-15. Rutgers-Newark remained steadily in contention, with Michael Suarez firing on all cylinders, but the Knights never relinquished and took the first set by five points.

The Knights capitalized on their momentum after their set one win to go up early in set number two. After setting a 7-3 scoreline, they soon extended their advantage to five. Alex Solodky was attacking well—he ended the match with a team-high 10 kills. However, Southern Virginia was storming away with a commanding eight point lead at 22-14. The Scarlet Raiders went on a 4-1 run, but it wasn't enough to pull even. The Knights took set two, putting themselves one away from a sweep.

The Scarlet Raiders pulled ahead early in set three, taking a two point lead and later a three point lead at 10-7. However, with the score at 11-9, the Knights scored three straight to jump ahead.

The later stages of set three was as tight as it gets. There was never a lead of greater than two, and the two sides were blow for blow right up until 23-23 when Southern Virginia squeaked two straight and snatched the third set for the sweep.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Virginia Wesleyan 2, (25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12)

The Scarlet Raiders exploded right out of the gate, taking an early 5-1 lead. They didn't take their foot off of the gas pedal until their opponents won four consecutive points, closing the gap to two. However, Rutgers-Newark was not to be denied. They pushed the gap back up to seven and never looked back for the set one victory.

Rutgers-Newark went up early again in set two, but Virginia Wesleyan leveled the score at nine. The two teams would also draw equal at 10, 11, 12, and 13. After that the Marlins took seven of eight points and used that momentum to power through, evening the set score at one.

The Marlins edged ahead at first in set three, but after a 5-1 run the Scarlet Raiders flipped the script. The script flipped right back over after Virginia Wesleyan found themselves up 20-16 late. As fate would have it, there was one more twist in this tale. Rutgers-Newark went on an astonishing eight point run, putting them at set point out of nowhere. They converted on the second attempt to restore their set lead.

The Marlins surged at the start of set four, but the Scarlet Raiders matched their energy. Rutgers-Newark remained behind the entire set, and Virginia Wesleyan carried their slim lead all the way to the conclusion, forcing the match to go all the way to five.

The final set was back and forth. The lead switched several times, as no side was willing to back down. With the score tied at 11, Michael Suarez and Massimo Roco powered their team to a 4-1 streak, grabbing the victory at the very last gasp.
