Scarlet Raiders Blanked by Montclair State in Home Doubleheader

NEWARK, NJ | Despite threatening on several occasions, Rutgers-Newark (6-12) was unable to score a run against a dominant Red Hawks (17-7) pitching staff as they dropped both games at Frederick Douglass Field.

Game 1: Montclair State 3, Rutgers-Newark 0

The visitors got off the mark early when Carlee Iannone scored on a throwing error. After that, it was a complete pitcher's duel.

Madison Umlauf did well to limit the Montclair State offense. In five innings of action, she allowed only three runs on six hits and a walk. Mia Aquino followed that with two scoreless to keep the Scarlet Raiders within striking distance throughout the game.

However, the Red Hawks' arms were just a bit more effective on the day. Sage Rizzi delivered 6.1 innings without allowing a run, and Brooke Biamonte secured the final two outs for a team shutout.

Iannone singled in a pair of runners in the sixth to give her team a cushion, and that was all she wrote for game one.

Game 2: Montclair State 5, Rutgers-Newark 0

Once again, the Red Hawks struck in the first inning. Sophia Alonso led off the game with a triple, and a wild pitch allowed her to score.

Then, in the second, they tacked on two more runs amidst some Scarlet Raider pitching difficulties. Two innings later, Liz Mullen came home on an Iannone single to make it 4-0.

Bella Bucy pitched for the visitors in game two, and she was virtually unstoppable. She gave up only four hits en route to a complete game shutout.

Montclair State added one more run in the top of the seventh, and the Red Hawks took home with them a pair of wins and a perfect ERA on the day.
