Softball Back to Winning Ways Against Hunter College

NEWARK, NJ | With a slugfest in the first game and a blowout in the second, today's doubleheader told two different stories with the same ending: the Scarlet Raiders (8-12) emerging triumphant over the Hawks (5-15).

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 18, Hunter 17

The Scarlet Raiders got on the board first with a Josephine Morales RBI single that brought around Mariah Rimas-McManus. But Hunter shook things up in a major way in the second frame. Fueled by a six hit rally, the visitors plated seven runners to take a five run lead.

Rutgers-Newark responded well to their opponents' offensive outburst. Keelin O'Brien and Maddy Haack contributed to three runs in the second, and three more in the third put the home team back on top. The Hawks grabbed one in the fourth, but the Scarlet Raiders put up four more in the bottom half to establish a three run advantage at 11-8.

In the very next inning, the hits racked up once again. The visitors saw five runners reach home to take back their lead, but it wouldn't last long. Kristin Kloss, Mariah Rimas-McManus, Keelin O'Brien, and Josephine Morales all poked RBI singles for a six run fifth. This set the score at 17-13 after five.

Each team put up a single run in the sixth, and Hunter was looking to cause trouble in the seventh. They rallied for three, but came up one run short of tying it up. In an absolutely wild rollercoaster of a game, the Scarlet Raiders just barely escaped with an important win.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 9, Hunter 0

Charly Peter took to the pitcher's circle in game two, and she was dominant from start to finish. In five innings of work she allowed only five hits and two walks, earning her a complete game shutout.

Meanwhile, the bats were steady throughout. Josephine Morales singled home Kristin Kloss in the first inning. Then, in the third, Kloss and Morales were in action again as the Scarlet Raiders extended their lead to four.

One inning later, Rutgers-Newark really broke it open. Kristin Kloss hit an inside-the-park homerun, bringing home Kayla Cardozo in the process. Josephine Morales and Alison Miller followed that with RBI of their own, providing the home team with a nine run cushion that Hunter could not reduce. Thus, the game ended after five due to the run-ahead rule.
