Softball Breaks Even With the Gothic Knights

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (11-17) split a conference doubleheader for the first time this season after taking the first and dropping the second against NJCU (15-13).

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 7, NJCU 4

After a scoreless first, the Gothic Knights got on the board in the second thanks to a sacrifice fly hit by Jordan Mendolla.

It wasn't until the third inning that Rutgers-Newark picked up the pace. Mariah Rimas-McManus and Josephine Morales powered the Scarlet Raiders to a three run rally, giving themselves a two run edge.

The hosts pegged one back in the fourth, but before they could draw level, Rutgers-Newark was back on the attack. It was Morales again, as she tripled to score Keelin O'Brien and later came home on a passed ball. Gabriela Forese ripped an RBI single to make it another three run inning.

Each side grabbed a run in the sixth, and NJCU could not mount a full comeback in the seventh. Their single run in the final frame solidified a 7-4 scoreline in favor of Rutgers-Newark.

Game 2: NJCU 5, Rutgers-Newark 2

Kristin Kloss got things started for the Scarlet Raiders when a dropped third strike allowed her to swipe home after the throw to first base. NJCU evened the score through an RBI groundout hit by Mya Villanueva.

The Gothic Knights doubled their tally in the very next frame, taking a 2-1 lead in the process. Pitching took over the game in the third and fourth, providing a pair of blank frames for both sides. Then, in the fifth, Keelin O'Brien singled to right-center field, scoring Mariah Rimas-McManus and tying the game.

It was the hosts who broke the deadlock in the sixth. A pair of doubles brought three runners home, giving NJCU a lead that they would not relinquish in the seventh. Thus, the Gothic Knights secured a game two win.
