Softball Splits the Rutgers Showdown

CAMDEN, NJ | In their last games of the 2025 season, the Scarlet Raiders (12-26) picked one up and dropped one against their fellow Rutgers affiliates in Rutgers-Camden (5-30).

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 7, Rutgers-Camden 2

The Scarlet Raiders struck first when Keelin O'Brien singled home Kristin Kloss. The hosts immediately answered in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI double hit by Luci Hutchinson.

The Scarlet Raptors grabbed the lead with a run in the second, but after that Charly Peter completely shut them down. She worked through the rest of the full seven innings without giving up another run. All that she needed was for the bats to pick her up.

And they did exactly that. O'Brien tied the game in the third with another RBI single. Then, in the next inning, Kalyna Figol and Alexis Claiborne drove in two more to give Rutgers-Newark the lead.

It was Claiborne and Figol at it again in the sixth, as the former poked a single to second base to score a run and the latter reached home on a wild pitch. The Scarlet Raiders added one more in the seventh when Keelin O'Brien slapped a sacrifice fly to bring her RBI tally to three for the game.

With the combination of strong pitching and consistent runs on offense, the Scarlet Raiders cruised to a straightforward game one victory.

Game 2: Rutgers-Camden 13, Rutgers-Newark 5

The Scarlet Raptors' offense found themselves in the second game. Mariah Rimas-McManus and Maddy Haack gave Rutgers-Newark two runs in the top of the first, but before they could get their first three outs on defense, the home team strung together five hits and plated eight runners in the process.

Rutgers-Camden tacked on another in the third, and then were able to produce a response for every time the Scarlet Raiders attempted to come back. Kalyna Figol doubled to bring home Jessica Boyce in the fourth, but the Scarlet Raptors scored one in the fourth as well. Destiny Maury and Figol each grabbed an RBI in the fifth, but the hosts came back with a three spot in the bottom half.

Those three runs scored by Rutgers-Camden gave them an eight run lead after five innings, causing the game to end due to the run-ahead rule.
