NEWARK, N.J. – The Rutgers University–Newark women's volleyball team opened its 2025 campaign with a split at The Golden Dome, falling to Farmingdale State in straight sets before bouncing back to sweep Hunter College in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Scarlet Raiders couldn't find their offensive rhythm against a balanced Farmingdale attack, dropping the match 25–22, 25–21, 25–18. Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte paced the Raiders with eight kills, while Shayla Moody-Santos added six and Angelyse Orellana dished out 12 assists. Cyan Long anchored the defense with a team-high 18 digs, but the Raiders were held to a .052 hitting percentage as Farmingdale pulled away late in each set.
Rutgers–Newark responded with energy in its second match of the day, sweeping Hunter College 25–22, 25–16, 30–28 to earn its first win of the season. Simba-Malasarte put together a dominant performance, recording 17 kills, four blocks, and three aces to lead the way. Orellana set the tone offensively with 19 assists, while Long added 13 digs to steady the back row. Sabrina Suquinagua chipped in three aces as the Raiders' serve proved to be a key difference.
