ANNADALE-ON-HUDSON, NY -The Rutgers–Newark women's soccer team battled back from an early deficit to earn a 2–1 road victory over SUNY Delhi on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos struck first in the 38th minute when Jordan DeNinno found the back of the net, sending the Scarlet Raiders into halftime trailing 1–0.
Rutgers–Newark wasted little time turning the tide in the second half. Just 19 seconds after the restart, Vielka Fernandez buried the equalizer off a pass from Ruby Hogue to level the score. Only a few minutes later, Maria Castillo delivered the decisive blow, finishing a feed from Mariana Valencia in the 51st minute to give the Scarlet Raiders the lead.
From that point on, Rutgers–Newark controlled every aspect of the match. The Raiders outshot Delhi 34–3, generated 12 corner kicks, and forced the Broncos' goalkeeper into 16 saves while holding their opponent without a corner. The two quick goals proved to be all Rutgers–Newark needed, as the defense shut the door the rest of the way.
Behind Fernandez and Castillo's timely finishes and a dominant all-around defensive effort, the Scarlet Raiders turned a halftime deficit into a confident road win, setting the tone for the rest of the season.
