Newark, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball team hosted a tri-match at The Golden Dome on Saturday, opening the day with a hard-fought 3-0 setback against Cairn University before bouncing back to sweep Lehman College in straight sets.
The Scarlet Raiders came out competitive against Cairn, dropping the match by set scores of 25-21, 29-27, and 25-20. The second set proved to be the turning point, as Rutgers-Newark battled into extra points but ultimately fell just short. Despite the loss, the Raiders showed strong serving with 14 aces, led by Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte, who recorded nine kills and five aces. Cyan Long anchored the defense with 21 digs, while setter Angelyse Orellana handed out 15 assists to pace the offense.
Rutgers-Newark quickly turned the page in their second match, rolling past Lehman College 25-14, 25-7, and 25-13. The Raiders hit .304 as a team and dominated at the service line with 19 aces, overwhelming the Lightning from start to finish. Simba-Malasarte and Helen Bilomasur tallied seven kills, while Long continued her strong day with seven aces of her own. Orellana directed the attack with 11 assists as Rutgers-Newark cruised to the sweep to close out the day on a high note.
