NEWARK, N.J. – The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball team battled to a five-set victory over Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday night inside the Golden Dome, taking the match 3–2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-9).
The Scarlet Raiders opened strong, controlling the first set (25-20) behind efficient attacking and steady defense. Rutgers-Camden answered in the second, pulling away late for a (25-22) win to even the match. In the third, Newark regrouped and regained momentum, using timely kills to edge out a (25-21) set victory.
Camden responded again in the fourth, capitalizing on Newark errors and forcing a decisive set with a (25-21) win. In the fifth and final frame, the Scarlet Raiders stepped up under pressure, racing out to a lead and closing the door with a (15-9) victory to secure the match.
Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte powered Newark with a team-high 16 kills, while Tracey Ilderis added nine and Shayla Moody-Santos chipped in eight. Angelyse Orellana directed the attack with 29 assists, while Miley Clenaghan anchored the defense with a team-high 21 digs. The Scarlet Raiders totaled 44 kills in the match while keeping errors in check with just 19.
The Scarlet Raiders picked up their first NJAC victory of the season and will look to keep the momentum rolling when they travel to Stockton on Thursday, October 2nd.
