HARRISONBURG, Va. — Rutgers University–Newark men's volleyball completed a strong weekend at the Eastern Mennonite Tournament, picking up three wins, including a pair of straight-set victories on Saturday over Bethany College and Stevenson University on Saturday.
Rutgers-Newark opened the day with a dominant performance against Bethany College, winning 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 in the first match of the tournament. Michael Suarez and Logan Fernandes each recorded seven kills to lead the Scarlet Raiders offensively, while Rutgers-Newark's defensive effort limited Bethany to a .015 hitting percentage for the match.
Momentum carried into the afternoon matchup against Stevenson University, as Rutgers-Newark once again delivered a straight-set win, taking 25-21, 25-14, 25-15. Michael Suarez led the way again with 10 kills and seven digs, while Duncan Sturt totaled 32 assists and added four kills to direct the Scarlet Raiders' offense. Aleks Kolodziej recorded nine kills on a .615 hitting percentage and added three block assists, as Rutgers-Newark maintained control throughout the match and pulled away in the final two sets.
Rutgers-Newark finished the Eastern Mennonite Tournament with a 3-0 record, dropping just one set during the weekend in a 3-1 victory on Friday before closing the event with back-to-back sweeps on Saturday.
The Scarlet Raiders will look to carry that momentum forward as they prepare for a big test on Tuesday when they travel to New York City to take on #8-ranked NYU.
