DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Rutgers-Newark baseball team scored late to earn a 3–2 victory over Fredonia on Sunday during its spring break trip in Florida. The game was called after eight innings due to rain.
The Scarlet Raiders opened the scoring in the second inning when Damon Rivera singled to right field to drive in Malik Little and give Rutgers-Newark a 1–0 lead.
Fredonia answered in the third inning with a pair of runs to take a 2–1 advantage. Ryan Mettler delivered an RBI single to tie the game before Andrew Tucker brought home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
Rutgers-Newark responded in the sixth inning to even the score. Rivera came through again with an RBI single to center field, scoring Joseph Bernardo and tying the contest at 2–2.
The Scarlet Raiders took the lead for good in the eighth inning. Jonathan Jerez doubled to right field to bring home Bernardo and give Rutgers-Newark a 3–2 advantage.
Bernardo led the way offensively for Rutgers-Newark, finishing with three hits and scoring two runs. Jerez and Rivera each added two hits in the victory.
On the mound, Lukas Meyer picked up the win for the Scarlet Raiders, pitching over three innings while allowing just one hit and no runs.
Rutgers-Newark will continue its spring break schedule in Florida with a game against Framingham State tomorrow.
