MADISON, N.J. — The Rutgers–Newark baseball team fell to FDU-Florham, 16-8, in a game called after six innings due to poor visibility at Naimoli Ballpark.
Michael Weinbel got the ball rolling for the Scarlet Raiders when he singled to left field, scoring Gilroy Prial. Following a few miscues from FDU, Rutgers–Newark capped the inning with Jonathan Jerez homering to left field, bringing home Weinbel and Joseph Bernardo.
FDU-Florham responded in the second inning with eight unanswered runs, adding another in the third to take a three-run lead. Rutgers–Newark tried to rally in the fourth when Weinbel hit a two-run home run, scoring himself and Matthew Toretto, cutting the deficit to one. However, an error by the Scarlet Raiders in the bottom of the fourth allowed FDU to tack on two more runs. The Devils then added five runs in the fifth, putting the game out of reach.
The game ended after six innings with a final score of 16-8 due to limited visibility. Weinbel led Rutgers–Newark offensively, finishing with a home run, 2 runs, 2 hits, and 3 RBIs.
