Newark, N.J. – The Rutgers-Newark baseball team closed out its 2026 season on Sunday afternoon, hosting Montclair State in a Senior Day doubleheader.
Prior to first pitch, the Scarlet Raiders honored their senior class, recognizing #5 Reid Duffus, #6 Gilroy Prial, #7 Michael Weinbel, #10 Matthew Torreto, #16 John Farrington, #18 Michael Scaglione, and #44 Matthew L'Hommedieu for their contributions to the program.
In Game 1, Rutgers-Newark fell to Montclair State, 10-4, as the Red Hawks used a five-run first inning to take early control. Rutgers-Newark answered right back in the bottom half, plating four runs to cut the deficit to 5-4. RBI walks from RJ Kernan and Malik Little, followed by a two-run single from Daniel Fedorco, highlighted the inning. However, Montclair State added three runs in the third and two more in the fifth to pull away and secure the opener.
In Game 2, Rutgers-Newark dropped a 4-2 decision to Montclair State, in a tightly contested battle. The Scarlet Raiders struck first in the second inning, as Malik Little delivered an RBI double to left field to give Rutgers-Newark a 1-0 lead.
Montclair State evened the score in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but Rutgers-Newark regained the advantage in the eighth inning. Trevor Wallace drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice, scoring Reid Duffus to make it 2-1.
Looking to close out the game in the ninth, the Scarlet Raiders ran into trouble as Montclair State rallied late. The Red Hawks tied the game on an RBI single before taking the lead on a sacrifice fly. An RBI double later in the inning added an insurance run, as Montclair State completed the comeback to secure the sweep.
Rutgers-Newark concludes the 2026 season with a 13-23 overall record and a 5-13 mark in NJAC play.
