WAYNE, N.J. — The Rutgers-Newark baseball team fell 6-5 on the road to William Paterson in NJAC action on Thursday afternoon at Jeff Albies Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (10-15, 2-5 NJAC) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, as RBI from Joseph Bernardo and RJ Kernan made it 2-0. William Paterson responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game before taking the lead in the fourth.
Rutgers-Newark answered in the fifth inning, which started with a boom as Michael Weinbel homered to left field to even the score. The Scarlet Raiders continued the momentum, adding two more runs in the frame to take a 5-3 lead.
That would be the last time Rutgers-Newark crossed home plate, however, as William Paterson chipped away with runs in the sixth and a two-run seventh inning to reclaim the lead and secure the 6-5 victory.
Rutgers-Newark totaled 13 hits on the day, led by a strong performance from RJ Kernan, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Weinbel added two hits, including his home run, while scoring twice. Jonathan Jerez and Malik Little each contributed two hits and an RBI.
On the mound, Chase Ostrowski got the start, tossing 6 innings while allowing four runs. Luke Hagen took the loss in relief despite allowing just two runs in 2 innings, none earned.
The teams will meet once again tomorrow, this time at Weequahic Park, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
