Scarlet Raiders Face Fredonia State For Classic Title

NEWARK, NJ – Senior forward David Cherry (Linden, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) netted 10 of his game-high 27 points during a 21-0 run which staked Rutgers-Newark to a 23-2 lead as the Scarlet Raiders rolled over Medgar Evers, 110-61, in the opening round of the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic in The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (1-0) squares off against Fredonia State (1-0), a 64-55 winner over Allegheny (0-1), in the championship game at 4 p.m. tomorrow following the 2 o'clock consolation matchup.

Raider head coach Joe Loughran went to his bench early and often as everyone scored and five Rutgers-Newark players reached double digits. Cherry added four rebounds and four assists in just 22 minutes on the floor. He made 10 of 13 shots from the floor, including four of five from beyond the arc.

Junior guard De'Vion Manning (Maplewood, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) finished with career-highs of 15 points and seven assists while junior forward Ryan Gillens (Newark, NJ/Eastside) posted a career-high 17 points and collared six rebounds.

Junior transfer point guard Tim Smith (Mullica Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) hauled down nine rebounds while chipping in four assists and two steals and junior forward Deshawn Singleton (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) came off the bench for a double-double with 16 points on seven-of-11 shooting and a team-high 11 rebounds. He also added three assists and two steals.

Freshman guard Tauron Mantion (Newark, NJ/University), who tallied 10 points, ran off five straight points with a 3-point jumper and a pair of free throws to push the Rutgers-Newark lead to 46-17 with 2:13 left in the opening period.

Junior guard Ronald Holloway, who paced the Cougars (0-1) with 24 points and seven rebounds, converted a conventional 3-point play with 18:07 left in the game to pull Medgar Evers to within 22 points at 52-30. But, the Raiders methodically pulled away to lead by as many as 53 points at 110-57 with1:57 left.
