UNION, NJ – Rutgers-Newark ran its winning streak to four with a 6-3 victory over Kean University on the Alumni Stadium Courts, finishing a match that was halted by darkness on Wednesday.

Rutgers-Newark 6, Kean 3

The Scarlet Raiders (5-7, NJAC 2-3) finished their New Jersey Athletic Conference slate with wins over William Paterson and Kean after an 0-3 start. The Cougars slipped to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in NJAC play.

Rutgers-Newark took five of six singles matches to offset a 2-1 deficit in doubles play that the squad carried over from Wednesday into today's wrap up.

Freshman Ashley Lawrence, juniors Kelly Fitzsimmons and Amanda Northrup, and sophomores Mercedes Kuilan and Wanze Li posted singles wins with only rookie Lia Salierno bowing in a three-set defeat on the second flight to Lauren Petrucelli, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Lawrence, who missed Wednesday's doubles play because of classes, bounced back to defeat Lisette LaForge, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 on the top flight while Northrup battled to a 7-5, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3 win on the No. 5 court over Kean's Jessica Oquendo

Fitzsimmons was stopped Alleyna Alleyne, 6-4, 6-2 on the third flight, and Kuilan needed a tie-breaker to subdue Miriam Penafiel, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 on the No. 5 court.

Li won a third-set tie-breaker to complete a 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) come-from-behind win over Annie Ramos

Rutgers-Newark is scheduled to begin play in the NJAIAW Championship at Drew University tomorrow.
