Balanced Scarlet Raiders Storm Past Berkeley, 89-33

NEWARK, NJ – Seniors James Johnson and Phil Barnes paced a balanced Rutgers-Newark attack in an 89-33 romp over Berkeley College in The Golden Dome.

The Scarlet Raiders (7-3), who shot over 50% from the floor for the fourth straight game, had six players with nine or more points to maintain a torrid streak going into the fall examination break. Rutgers-Newark scored 86 or more points in a contest for the third consecutive game while equaling its fewest points allowed total of the season.

Johnson had 10 of his 17 points and Barnes, 10 of his 14, as the Raiders constructed a 42-16 halftime lead. Head coach Joe Loughran went to his bench early and often with all but two Rutgers-Newark players scoring in the contest. No starter played more than 18 minutes.

Johnson hit two of four 3-point jumpers and five of six free throws. Barnes was six of eight from the field and two for two from the line while grabbing a game-high six rebounds and making three steals.

The Raiders got nine points apiece from senior forwards Ryan Gillens and Deshawn Singleton, senior guard De'Vion Manning and junior guard Micheal DeShields. Manning, who hit two of four shots from beyond the arc, added four assists. DeShields chipped in five rebounds and three steals, while Singleton pulled down four rebounds to help the Raiders dominate the boards, 48-25. Senior guard Tim Smith dished out a game-high five assists and collared four rebounds in just 14 minutes of play.

Rookie forward Hussein Abdelmaksoud came off the bench to hit three of four shots from the floor and snare four rebounds – all career highs – in just five minutes. Rookie guard Al-Don Muhammad added four assists, four points and four rebounds.

The Bulldogs were paced by forward Donovan Black with seven points. No other Berkeley player had more than four points as the visitors shot just 25% from the floor including a dismal 1-for-17 night from 3-point range.

Berkeley (3-8) fell into a 16-1 hole before getting its first field goal with 12:32 left in the opening period.

Rutgers-Newark rolls into the exam break on a three-game winning streak and now must wait until the New Year to resume play. The Raiders take on Hiram College in the opening game of the Marymount Invitational in Arlington, VA, on January 2 in at 2 p.m.
