Bearcats Spoil Scarlet Raider Home Opener

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark sophomore second baseman Emily Ibarra went two-for-three and drove in two runs, but Baruch posted a 4-3 win over the Scarlet Raiders in the opening game of a home season-opening doubleheader on Alumni Field, before recording a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the first inning in the first game of the twinbill after the Bearcats' Melanie Pellegrino put Baruch ahead with a lead-off inside-the-park home run, the Scarlet Raiders responded with a run of their own, knotting the game in the bottom half of the opening stanza on sophomore Shannon Davis' one-out single to center field which drove in sophomore centerfielder Jessica Zelaya.

After a pair of runs gave the Bearcats a 3-1 advantage, the gritty Scarlet Raiders would trim the margin to one in the bottom of the fifth on an Ibarra single that scored junior Tania Cintron.  But Baruch would regain its two-run lead with on a Gisell Alix single to right that scored junior shortstop Melissa Pena in the top of the sixth.

Still down 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Scarlet Raiders would make one final push, cutting the lead back down to one on an Ibarra single that scored junior Sam Weer, who led off the inning with a single to left.  But Bearcat freshman reliever Cristina Arce, who earned a save by pitching the final two innings, would record the game's final out moments later on a groundball to third.

Davis finished one-for-four with an RBI. Weer, Cintron and freshman Kat Renteria each finished one-for-three.

Alix and Pellegrino combined for three hits, two runs and two RBIs for Baruch, while sophomore Lynn Schiano earned her third win of the season, allowing five hits over five innings while striking out seven.

Junior transfer Amber Affholter helped keep the Scarlet Raiders within striking distance in the second game of the twinbill, allowing just one run over the first five innings before surrendering a pair of Bearcat runs in the top of the sixth. Affholter struck out four while allowing just one earned run on four hits in her seven innings of work.

Zelaya helped pace the Scarlet Raiders attack, going two-for-three with a walk. Renteria and fellow freshman Tina Aita each finished one-for-three.

Sophomore Michele Runko finished two-for-two with an RBI to lead the Baruch offense, while Pellegrino went one-for-three with an RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Andrea Tepfer earned her fourth win of the season allowing just five hits in seven innings while striking out nine.

Rutgers-Newark will look to bounce back in a doubleheader with Lehman scheduled for Thursday, March 26, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
